As I sat in the stands at Walsall last Tuesday, even I – a self-proclaimed Leicester City rational optimist – was struggling to extract too many positives and had to admit that the general outlook was looking fairly grim.
One shining light last week, however, amongst this LCFC-induced commotion and subsequent fan meltdown, was the Academy.
When Leicester won away
Exploring historical links with away wins at each of Leicester’s 19 Premier League opponents this season
Leicester City didn’t play Ipswich Town at all until Boxing Day 1961, when we travelled to Portman Road to face the team that would win the First Division title for the first and only time the following April.
So in the 1962/63 season, our first away win over Ipswich came against the reigning champions of England.
When most Leicester City fans think of Southampton away, the number nine comes to mind. But it was a number one who made his mark at The Dell in 1967, while a Saints striker made more than one mark after Leicester’s first visit back in the 19th century.
The team formed in 1886 by workers at the Dial Square workshop in the Royal Arsenal armaments factory in Woolwich famously played south of the river - but when Leicester Fosse first made the trip to face Arsenal nine years later, they didn’t have to cross the Thames.
Selhurst Park may be a tough place to go, and a tough place to get to, but Crystal Palace has a rich history of contests and spectacles that have drawn visitors from far and wide.

Previewing every Leicester City game in the 2024/25 Premier League season
What a difference a week makes. The relief of the first win over Bournemouth followed by the jubilation of the last-minute winner at Southampton fully extinguished.
Friday night lights. Rivalries renewed. Forest return to LE and face their former manager. How to get the juices flowing? How do we try to build the fans to a frenzy? To boost that atmosphere as we’ve seen can occur when it gets dark down Filbert Way. Coconut Rolls. Free Coconut Rolls. That’s the answer.
We appreciate serious, top journalism at the Hazzetta. We’ve really felt this in a week where several tabloids went with inane and manic ramblings on the recent England managerial appointment.
